HYPER INTERDISCIPLINARY CONFERENCE in the Philippines 2022

About HIC PH 2022:

Leave a Nest defines “deep technology” as a technology or combination of technologies that is used to solve different “deep issues”, a term we have created to mean issues deeply rooted into society, with no feasible solution yet. Throughout the years that Leave a Nest has been in the Philippines, we have seen startups and research teams that are very passionate to bring solutions in agriculture, healthcare, environment, manufacturing and other fields. However, developing deep technologies require a lot of data and information that needs to be stored, managed and analyzed efficiently from the point of research to prototyping and manufacturing, which makes it additionally challenging for the researchers and developers.

Through the Hyper Interdisciplinary Conference in the Philippines 2022, we will excavate issues in agriculture and forestry, healthcare, and manufacturing with frontliners and relevant stakeholders in these fields. We will then explore how we can tackle these issues together by working on information technology systems in the hopes of achieving Philippines in 3D: Data-Driven Deep Technology.

Keynote Session | Fusing the Framework of IT and Deep Technologies

With the rise of fintech and e-commerce platforms along with increasing internet dependency in the Philippines, merging the backbone of IT, AI, and other data analytics technologies with innovations that directly solves the issues of Philippine citizenry is essential. The time has come where shifting gears from traditional research fields towards the combination of data-driven research for agriculture, healthcare, and engineering fields, among others, will make sure to future-proof Philippine R&D initiatives. This session features leaders from the academe, industry, and government, all of whom believe and thrusts the data-high pathway research which can pave the way for inclusive deep technologies to enlighten, encourage, and establish the participants as the new breed of researchers who will pursue these emerging fields of studies and create chimeras of technology.

Keynote Speaker

Assoc. Prof. Albertson D. Amante
Vice President for Research, Development and Extension Services
Batangas State University

Engr. Albertson D. Amante is an Electronics Engineer and the Vice President for Research, Development and Extension Services at Batangas State University, serving since 2017.

His prowess in advancing and strengthening the culture of research and innovation in the university is evident as he is consistently involved in different institutionally and/or externally research projects, some of which received several prestigious awards, such as: the National Gawad Kalasag for the development of Tactical Operative Amphibious Drive (TOAD) and the Solar Isotropic Generator of Acoustic Wave in 2017 and 2018 respectively; Regional Winner during the STCIERD and STAARDEC R&D Science and Technology Forum and Competition and in the Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits among others.

Engr. Amante also spearheads the development of the innovation programs of the university which includes the establishment of the university-based Technology Business Incubator, the Center for Technopreneurship and Innovation, and the country’s very first Knowledge, Innovation and Science Technology (KIST) Park, a PEZA facility which the university is developing.

Mr. Francis Pugeda
Head of Emerging Technologies
Globe Telecom, Inc.

Mr. Francis Pugeda heads the technology-led innovation team of Globe Telecom. Together with his team, he experiments with transformative technologies and trends before they reach their disruptive potential. Before this, he handled various leadership roles in product management and mobile network operations. In his 25 years stint at Globe, he introduced several innovative solutions that received local and international awards and recognitions. Few of which are the democratization of citizen development for long-tail automation solutions, an AI/ML application that identifies the cell sites with highest risk of outage due to incoming typhoon, and modernization of legacy platforms through a composable solution that can potentially reduce cost by 97%.

Mr. Jo-dann Darong
Assistant Director, Competitiveness Bureau
Department of Trade and Industry

Mr. Jo-Dann “JD” N. Darong has served the Philippine government as the Project Development Officer at the DepEd, as the Project Manager at the Development Academy of the Philippines, as Senior Insurance Planning Officer at the DOF, and as an Economist at the SEC. This month, he completed the advanced master course in teaching entrepreneurship at the Stockholm School of Entrepreneurship (SSES). JD is completing his Ph.D. Development Studies at De La Salle University-Manila, and a Visiting Ph.D. Fellow at the NHH Norwegian School of Economics, BI Norwegian Business School, and the University of Oslo. He completed BSC Economics (2007) and MA Economics (2012) degrees.

The Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research considered JD as one of the 18 Early Career Research Scientists from Asia and the Pacific in 2017. Since 2019, JD sits as a Fairness Opinion Board member and designated as an economic and financial expert for the PH government’s technology transfer and commercialization projects. At present, JD is the Director III of the Competitiveness Bureau of the Department of Trade and Industry. Designated as the Bureau Assistant Director, JD is in charge of the Creative Industry Development program and oversees the Innovation and Competitiveness programs, including the CMCI and Philippine Quality Awards programs.

Panel Session 1 | Tuning-in to Digital Health: Growing Disparity in Prenatal Care

With the recent worldwide health and economic recessions, the Philippines, being among the top 15 most populous countries and 2nd highest birth rate in ASEAN region, is compelled to boost healthcare support for their citizens including the facilitation of healthy child births through deep technologies. This session will tackle current challenges in Philippine child and maternal care which can be solved by data-driven innovations that can possibly cap the gap in prenatal care facilities & professionals.

For this session, we have invited Melody International Ltd., a Japanese medical device startup company, together with Filipino healthcare stakeholders, Dr. Cecilia Dulla from Jaro 2 Main Health Center – Iloilo City and Dr. Luis Rodriguez from KARL Group Holdings, Inc., to showcase a concrete example of how a medical device coupled with wireless technology and the internet, will be able to save small lives from being lost.

We are also proud to announce that Melody International Ltd., as part of Leave a Nest Japan and Leave a Nest Philippines’ existing project with them, is actively pursuing to bring their innovative technology here in the Philippines. Recognizing the deep issue of the Philippines as an archipelagic country with a relatively high number of pregnant mothers, Leave a Nest supports Melody International and believes that this type of technology will be immensely useful in solving healthcare challenges specifically at the very local level.

Melody International has created a portable iCTG device consisting of 2 small transducers, which monitors the maternal and fetal vital signs, and is wirelessly connected to a tablet for faster and remote interpretation of data by their doctors. With the emergence of telehealth age even in medical devices, their technology can offer seamless and more accessible perinatal care for expectant mothers that can detect early signs of high-risk pregnancies during regular prenatal check-ups.

Mr Keiji Ninomiya has a background in philosophy from Hosei University and completed his MBA from Kagawa University. He has worked as a marketing director in the design and graphics industry. In 2015, he founded Melody International Ltd. with CEO Yhuko Ogata. In 2018, he was awarded the Monodzukuri Nippon Grand Awards by The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).

Cecilia T. Dulla, MD, DPAFP
Medical Officer
Jaro 2 Main Health Center Iloilo City

Dr. Dulla is from Iloilo City and holds a Diplomate in Family Medicine with the Philippine Academy of Family Physicians (PAFP), and also specializes in Industrial/Occupational Medicine. She was one of the pioneer students of the West Visayas State University College of Medicine, and has experiences as a retainer physician in various settings such as schools and companies. She has also been active in local medical associations, serving as the Secretary of the Iloilo Medical Society for 10 years, as a Board of Director and then Secretary of the PAFP Iloilo Chapter, for a total of 11 years, and was awarded as Outstanding Chapter Secretary by the Philippine Medical Association in 2005. She currently works as a Medical Officer at the Jaro 2 Main Health Center, does private practice, and is also currently working with Melody International to try out their technology in the Philippines.

Dr. Luis Ramon V. Rodriguez (LRVR) serves as the founder and guiding light of several medical companies through Karl Group Holdings Corporation. Each subsidiary forms part of his advocacy in bringing quality and advanced healthcare, medical education, health care insurance, and other medically related projects all over the Philippines. By profession, LRVR is an ENT-Head and Neck Surgeon, an established medi-preneur, doing medical business for more than 25 years, who also served as a board member in various organizations and hospitals local and international. LRVR played an active role in promoting health & wellness by being the founding member/board of directors of various organizations.

Panel Session 2 | Cyber-focused Ecology: Mapping the Seeds through Environmental Analytics

As a country with a vast amount of natural resources just like most parts of Southeast Asia, the Philippines has been historically the target of foreign countries to acquire such. An example of these sought after resources are timber, which made the Philippines one of the main destinations for wood in the past. Currently however, timber only accounts for less than 1% of the total exports, mostly due to lack of resources resulting from unsustainable forestry practices as well as resource abuse behind the scenes. Even though the government is doing its fair share of effort, this is something that can only be addressed through the collaboration of different sectors, and even different countries.

In this session, participants are expected to learn how current research-based technology can solve social and environmental problems, particularly in the forestry sector. These will be covered by Mr. Shunsuke Tsuboi and Mr. Jay Gajudo, who are Founders and Chief Executive Officer of their own data-driven startup companies, Sagri Co., Ltd and Galansiyang Inc.

Mr. Shunsuke Tsuboi graduated from Yokohama National University, Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineering. In 2018, he founded Sagri, which aims to solve problems in agriculture and the environment by combining star data (Satellite) x machine learning (AI) x plot technology (GRID).The company has also established a subsidiary in Bangalore, India.

He was selected as one of the MIT Technology Review’s Innovators Under 35 Who Will Create the Future, and selected for Forbes Japan 30 Under 30 2022. He is a member of “Study Group on Management of Agricultural Land Information Using Digital Maps”, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan, a Visiting Professor at the Information Management Innovation Professional University and 13th student of Softbank Academia.

Mr. Jay Arniel Gajudo

Jay dreamt of building a tech company since 12 years old. During high school, he dropped out for not attending with his subjects because he was eager to sell food and drinks inside the classroom to raise funds for his first drone project. After transferring from a different high school, he later convinced his parents to support his hobby in exchange for being more focused at school. He then made and flew his first DIY drone at 16. When he went to university at MSU-IIT, he established their startup with his thesis mates. He also got hired by their college dean as a research assistant before he even graduated to help them process their research. He also got a second job after graduation from a different department, but later ended his university research career to give full-time for Galansiyang Inc.

Engr. Oliver Coroza, PhD

Oliver Coroza completed his College Degree from the University of the Philippines at Los Baños in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering. Under the Masters of Science program of the Soil Science and Water Management of the University of Wageningen, The Netherlands, he specialized in Drainage Hydrology and Soil Physics. From the soil, he rose up to the wholistic level of viewing the environment by finishing his PhD in Environmental Planning at the University of Melbourne, Australia–focusing on integrating hydrology models with a geographic information system (GIS). In the last two decades and up to the present, he has focused on applying geospatial science for biodiversity conservation work contributing to: helping the government implement their conservation plans, assisting efforts in citizen science, formulating climate change policies, capturing carbon dioxide from the air through nature-based solutions, assessing vulnerability of ecosystems to disaster, and mapping high conservation value areas and ecosystem services for conservation auditing, and natural capital accounting.

Forester Juan Enrique D. Macaraig is the current Co-Project Manager of the Green Network Link of Metropolitan Manila in Support to the National Greening Program of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. He is a licensed Forester and graduated from the University of the Philippines Los Baños with a BS Forestry dregree and major in Environmental Forestry with speciality in Geographical Information System. He is affiliated with the Samahang Ekolohiya ng UPLB.

Panel Session 3 | Powering with AI and Metrics: Enhancing Hybrid Energy Systems

The Philippines is notorious for having electricity rates way too high for its economic level. Reasons behind this include challenges in power generation and distribution arising from the archipelagic structure of the country. Thankfully, new and improved technologies for energy generation have been sprouting to provide for off-grid areas, and a number of them are committed to generate energy more sustainably. The government also has policies to democratize the energy supply, allowing consumers to decide on their energy sources for cheaper and greener options. Adopting these new energy sources and policies requires a more complex management system, especially with a larger amount of data and information generated.

In this session, we will be introducing a technology that has effectively used the power of data analytics to allow consumers and different entities to operate efficiently under Exora Technologies with CEO Mr. Sergius Santos. Together with him, Dr. Glenn Baticados, the Program Head of Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture – Emerging Innovation for Growth Department (SEARCA-EIGD), and Ms. Maria Lourdes Dario, Director of Challenergy Philippines, will be joining the panel to give the participants further insights on how emerging technologies in renewable energy sector can be utilized and provide significant impact in the Philippines.

Sergius Santos is a graduate of MS Systems Engineering at the Kyushu Institute of Technology and BS Electronics and Communications Engineering at Ateneo de Manila University and was recognized by the St Gallen Symposium as one of its 100 leaders of tomorrow in 2018. Sergius is the co-founder and CEO of SOLX Technologies (formerly Exora), an energy solutions company in the Philippines. The company aims to provide affordable and accessible electricity to all Filipinos. Overall, Exora has helped save clients 1.9 M USD in electricity cost. Its platform is regarded to have enabled the first and fastest digital energy procurement in the Philippines streamlining the process from 3 to 6 months to 2.5 weeks.

He currently serves also as the Program Head of the Emerging Innovation for Growth Department (EIGD) in the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA).
