"In the era of founding business with empathy, can Japan's deep tech ventures lead the way?" Talk by 3 entrepreneurs from Southeast Asia who are tackling social issues.
The structure in which new industries are formed based on strong technology is being lost. In recent years, the world’s leading IT companies have used information to grow rapidly, enter new fields, and build stronger positions by investing in and acquiring technology ventures. However, the nature of such companies is being reconsidered.
Companies should truly face unresolved social issues. In this keynote speech, we will hear from three startup companies founders in Southeast Asia who are confronting major social issues that need to be tackled on a long-term basis. The keynote speech will provide an opportunity to think about how Japanese startups should confront social issues in an era where businesses built on empathy rather than monopoly by one company are becoming the new trend.

Mr. Kamarul A. Muhamed

Kamarul is the Founder and CEO of Aerodyne Group, a Malaysian drone solutions company that is ranked second in the world by Drone Industry Insights of Germany. Aerodyne was also named as Frost & Sullivan’s ‘Asia Pacific UAV Services Company of 2019’; and a recipient of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) Malaysia’s ‘Industry Excellence Gold Award 2019’.
Kamarul led Aerodyne from a 3 person start-up in 2014 to a global company with over 400-strong drone professionals operating in 35 countries in less than 5 years. He is a TEDx speaker and a drone Industry thought-leader and have presented his ideas and innovation on AI, drones and Industry 4.0 around the world.
Mr. Alan Goh

Alan Goh is the CEO and Co-Founder of NDR Medical Technology, Medtech start-up that develops surgical robotics, driven by Artificial Intelligence and Medical Image Processing to assist surgeons for minimally invasive surgery. He is also appointed as the Chairman for APACMed Start-up committee, guiding and building the Medtech eco-system within Asia Pacific.
With a diverse background from Engineering Research, Medtech Manufacturing to Device Commercialization, Alan was a winner in Slingshot 2018 and Medtech Innovator Asia-pacific 2019. He has successfully helped NDR raised Series A funding and inked partnership with Medical device Corporates across the region.

Japan-Singapore Ecosystem Session "The connection of hubs and its future"

Japan has long been positioned as an important market and collaborator for Singaporean companies, but due to differences in language and business practices, active collaboration has yet to be realized. In order to overcome this situation, Leave a Nest and the Singapore government have launched an initiative to connect the Japanese and Singaporean ecosystems in the form Enter to Japan Market Program since 2020. Leave a Nest and Enterprise Singapore (Singapore’s government agency) are jointly implementing a program to support Singaporean startups to enter the Japanese market and develop their technologies in Japan. In this session, the selected startups will give an overview of the future that the ecosystem connection will open up through their pitches.

TRIA has developed a plant-derived bioplastic that can be decomposed in just 24 hours and a composting system. By using tableware made of bioplastic material developed by TRIA, restaurants can turn food waste as well as tableware into compost within 24 hours by processing them in a special machine. There is no need to separate garbage, and the compost can be used to grow plants, making it possible to realize a circular economy.

Dr. Gunzburg is a serial entrepreneur and a graduate of the Veterinary University of Vienna, and has developed the Cell in the Box technology, which encapsulates immune cells for use in cancer treatment, and the Bac in the Box technology, which encapsulates microorganisms in a form that can be stored at room temperature for long periods of time. Dr. Gunzburg is a serial entrepreneur and a professor of virology at the Veterinary University of Vienna.

Future Food Tech ASIA
Food tech startups are hot in Southeast Asia right now. In this huge market of 650 million people with diverse food cultures, investment in food technology that can sustainably improve food self-sufficiency is accelerating at the national level. Singapore, in particular, which depends on imports for about 90% of its food, became the first country in the world to approve the sale of cell-derived cultured poultry meat at the end of last year, and is expected to become a global food tech hub in the future.
Recently Leave a Nest Group is actively supporting startup companies in the alternative meat and food packaging fields in Singapore and Malaysia. Shiok Meats, a Singapore-based company in which Real Tech Holdings has invested, is aiming to develop shrimp cell-cultured meat through collaboration with Japanese corporates. In this session, together with domestic and foreign startups that are at the forefront of the food tech industry, we will discuss a mechanism for creating cross-border collaboration to solve food issues in Southeast Asia.

The company develops cell-cultured cosmetics and meat, and offers its large-scale cell culture technology to the food and non-food sectors.

Mr. Akitaka Wilhelm Fujii

As President of Real Tech Holdings, Mr. Fujii drives the company’s mission to solve societal and environmental challenges through innovative deep-tech technologies. The company has four venture capital funds under management, with one specifically focusing on South East Asia.
Prior to joining Real Tech Holdings, Mr. Fujii worked for EIT Climate-KIC, EU’s largest organization fostering climate innovation. He was involved in setting up several business units, led a company-wide change management program focusing on people management and managed the company’s effort to assess its climate impact. Mr. Fujii holds a Master’s degree in International Studies from the University of Tokyo.

Cyberjaya, Asia's Leading City for Technology Installment, is the Key to Establishing a Halal Hub - Collaboration between MNCs and Startups in Malaysia
The Malaysian government is promoting Industry4WRD, a Malaysian version of Industry 4.0, as a national strategy to improve the productivity level of the manufacturing industry. As a result of the startups creation measures that were focused on in the 2010s, Malaysian-originated startups are now strongly driving this national strategy. However, Malaysia is facing a lack of large corporations that can work together with venture businesses to promote large-scale projects such as the realization of a smart mobility society, an efficient and convenient healthcare system, and the promotion of digitalization at the national level. Cyberjaya, a special economic zone located near the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, has solved this problem and is producing a number of examples of collaboration between large corporations and venture businesses. By setting up a preferential system for corporate taxation and foreign employment, large foreign companies are moving into the area one after another, and at the same time, promising Malaysian startup businesses are setting up shop. This city is the key for Japanese companies to enter the halal market. Mr. Kamalul of Aerodyne Group, the world’s second largest drone company based in Cyberjaya, and the Innovation Division Manager of Cyberview, the operator of Cyberjaya, will discuss what this city has to offer and how to take advantage of it.

Harnessing the power of Japanese deep tech startups for Philippine issues
The Philippines, a developing country in Southeast Asia, with its accelerating economic growth is a country that economists around the world say should be given attention from now on. However, being the developing country it is, problems and issues are still rampant. Because of that, it is expected that neighboring countries such as Japan will be using their technologies to solve these issues and bring about new industries. In this session, we will present the current state of science and technology in the Philippines, issues particularly related to agriculture and environment, and lastly introduce two Japanese startups that are trying to tackle these issues by expansion into the country.
